Native Flame American Hophornbeam, also known as Blue Beech, is a great choice to plant in a moist spot. Growing best in rich, moist soil, it will tolerate occasional flooding. Its dark green leaves turn bright red in autumn. Smooth gray bark has a ropey, muscular appearance. This tree grows in an upright, oval shape, to 30' tall and 20' wide. Hardy from zones 3-9.
