- Diospyros virginiana
American Persimmon trees are fast growing to 30-40' tall, ideal to fill an open habitat. They can tolerate a wide range of climates and environmental conditions, including erratic water drainage. Great along riverbanks or beside ponds! Very resistant to diseases and pests. They leaf out late in the spring, and flower even later, so fruit is not affected by spring frosts. Fall color is purple to burgundy. Bark is very distinctive, growing as small square chunks. Fruit is very tasty after ripening, great for baking. Hardy to zones 4-9.
